Here’s my little mini-review of Amazing Spider-Man:

It sucked. I liked it.

How does that make sense? I’ll try to explain.

Things I didn’t like:

Garfield as Peter Parker. He is a good actor. I like him. He is not Peter Parker. He never clicked in the role. His Parker was a huge douche. He was never likable, even in the scenes that he was supposed to be. Yeah, I know, teens are supposed to be that way. Peter Parker is not. I realize this is probably more the fault of the script, but still.

The tone. Yes, Spidey is much more of a smart ass. He has a much better sense of humor than the previous incarnation. However, the movie itself lacks…soul. It lacks charm. It’s just kind of…there. It’s dark, and it’s not Spidey.

Things I did like:

Garfield as Spidey. His Spidey was a lot of fun. Cracking wise, swinging around, doing his parkour, Spidey was awesome. The suit was odd, but it was barely noticeable. I liked the action and the way he handled it.

Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy. I didn’t think she really, I dunno, WAS Gwen Stacy, but I liked her version. She was a strong character, and that was a nice change.

Rhys Ifans as Curt Connors. Sure, he didn’t really look the part, and the Lizard was lacking in snout. Who cares? The part was perfect on both counts. He was sympathetic, which is exactly how I like my villains.

Overall, I guess I liked the movie. It was better than I expected. However, as a huge Spidey fan, I don’t think I’ve gotten the movie I want just yet. Oh well. I’ll still watch the next one.

E3 trailer for Rolling Western, an original third-person action title with Tower Defense elements (think Orcs Must Die) coming to Nintendo 3DS’s eShop. I wish Nintendo had more new first-party IPs like this to show at E3! I wonder which studio/division developed this?
